Abstract: This study is based on a teacher training program that targets at gender-based school bullying, aiming to explore China’s practices of and contributions to combating school bullying. Through participatory observations and in-depth interviews with 17 teachers, this study proposes that teachers’ gender consciousness is rooted in social culture. Gender consciousness is not shaped from nothing, but through a pluralistic process of reflecting on traditional gender norms, breaking inherent gender stereotypes while understanding, accommodating, and accepting gender and sexuality. Applying a variety of social work methods, we link teachers’ self-growth experience and creatively inspire them to “believe in experience beyond experience”, which accelerates the awakening of trainees’ gender consciousness, enhances their recognition of gender-based bullying, promotes their intervention strategies and self-efficacy. In view of this, this study has important theoretical and practical significance.
