An Intervention Study of “Reading + Game” Therapy to Alleviate Children’s Fear of Medical Treatment

Abstract: Medical fear is common among children undergoing diagnosis and treatment., Such fear may lead to children avoiding or delaying medical treatment. This study investigates the feasibility of a combined model of reading therapy and play therapy in alleviating children’s fear of medical treatment, based on the theory of cognitive behavioral therapy. to the aim is to construct an effective service program for social work intervention in children’s medical fear. Adopting a quasi-experimental design, eighteen children out of 120 respondents in X Hospital of Yunnan Province have been selected by a mixed research method and randomly divided into an intervention group and a control group. The intervention group receives the “reading + game” therapy group intervention, while the control group doesn’t receive any intervention. Before the intervention, there has been no statistical significance in the degree of medical fear, age, gender, education level, and age of the children in the two groups. After the intervention, the scores of the intervention group is significantly lower than those of the control group, indicating that The “reading+game” therapy is effective in reducing medical care. Therefore, based on the theory of cognitive-behavioral therapy, “reading + game” therapy can effectively alleviate children’s fear of medical treatment and improve children’s adherence to treatment. The “reading+game” therapy is an enjoyable and relatively easy to alleviate children’s medical fear. However, “reading+game” therapy should be closely combined with other therapeutic methods and professional guidance for comprehensive intervention. The intervention measures should also be evaluated and adjusted according to the individual situation.
