Abstract: China has witnessed an increasing application of family therapy theories and skills in professional practice. Bowen family systems theory is intensively introduced herein. Using an example of a traditional Chinese family, this paper identifies its presenting problem, analyses its emotional process and interaction pattern, and formulates intervention strategies. Through embedding the case in local context, this paper also offers several explanations to the unique causes of the problem faced by this family. Both socio-cultural factors and intra- family factors work jointly to affect the family process. Implications for raising family workers' cultural awareness and promoting parenting education are also discussed.

Key words: family therapy, Bowen family systems theory, indigenization
